The Ringwald Theatre in Ferndale, Michigan is presenting Matthew Lopez’s play “Somewhere” February 6th -February 22nd 2026 (Performances on Friday and Saturday evenings, and Sunday matinees, for a total of nine performances).
In 1959, while the musical West Side Story continues to successfully play on Broadway, the Candelaria family continue dreaming of theatrical fame. But the leveling of their barrio (neighborhood) to make way for Lincoln Center, jeopardizes both their hopes and plans. Somewhere is a memory plan about family, community, identity and the power of dreams.
While not a musical, the play contains several dance numbers.
We are looking for self-identified Latino actors to play the parts of:
ALEJANDRO CANDELARIA (23-24) Oldest sibling and de facto caretaker of the family, including his mother. He the responsible, practical and centered person. He also was a professional dancer as a child and deep inside he longs to escape from the overwhelming and at times stifling responsibility for his family. He frustrated by the real life circumstances that haven’t allowed him the opportunity to break free and pursue his dreams. He dances in the show and should have dance experience (modern jazz, ballet).
FRANCISCO CANDELARIA (18-20) Younger brother and smartass wise guy kid. Unlike his two siblings, he is not a dancer, but makes up for it with his enthusiasm and personality. He harbors ambitions of being the next Puerto Rican Marlon Brando.
There is a stipend of $500. Rehearsals will begin January 10 th and will take place on some weeknights and some weekends prior to performance.
